On The Water
Words and Melody by Catherine M Thompson ©2013
Music Composition by Michael Graham and Chris Birkett
Verse I:
A certain calm descends that stills my restless mind
I leave every fear and worry far behind
And things that really matter
Like life and love and you
Seem more than true
On the water
Chorus:
On the water my sorrows wash away
On the water I'm lifted by the waves
My spirit soars to climb the wind
Between the earth and sky
That's why I feel free on the water
Verse II:
Whenever I have found myself beside a lake
The rushing ebb and flow, a constant give and take
Its sound drowns out the chatter
In sweet serenity
I'm more than me
On the water
Chorus repeat:
On the water my sorrows wash away…
Bridge:
It doesn't have to be
A wild and wondrous sea
A little stream or quiet pond
Will do for me
And even in a city square
If I can find a fountain there
I'm happy
Chorus:
On the water my sorrows wash away…
Verse III and out:
And when my time is done
On that fateful day
Put me in a boat and watch me float away
My heart will be at ease
And I will rest in peace
For all eternity on the water
For all eternity
On the water
Sea Song (As sung)

(“gypsy” refers to dancers & wanderers)
Ships are addressed in the feminine, therefore the lament is sung by the female singer, as a ship
metaphor for a woman struggling for independence and freedom but weighed down such that the
more she strives for it, the more likely she is to be trapped by her life.
Verse I
Male: Oh, sail fisher-woman, sail away-oh
Why do you sit anchor-down-oh?
Female: Well I must stay in the harbour today
For my crew has gone into the town-oh
For my crew has gone into the town-oh
Verse II
Male: Well, sail rover-woman, sail away-oh
Why do you sit anchor-down-oh?
Female: Well I must stay in the harbour today
For my crew has run me aground-oh.
For my crew has run me aground-oh
Verse III
Male: Then sail, gypsy woman, sail away-oh
Why do you sit anchor-down-oh?
Female: Well I must stay in the harbour today-ay
They have wrapped me in chains and I’ve drowned-oh
They have wrapped me in chains
And I have drown-ded-oh!
Verse III repeat
Male: Then sail, gypsy woman, sail away-oh
Why do you sit anchor-down-oh?
Female: Well I must stay in the harbour today-ay
They have wrapped me in chains and I’ve drowned-oh
They have wrapped me in chains
And I have drown-ded-oh!
Stay Down Here With You

Verse I
I came from icy winters
After years of stormy weather
To see if warm Australia
Was the land to call my own
Then the moment that I saw you
I had to be here with you
You filled my life with sunshine
You gave my heart a home
Chorus
'N my heart soars the skies above
The red hills of Australia
Sweeps the tops of gum trees
Reaching high into the blue
So I will leave all that is old
And has the comfort of familiar
I will sail across the seas
To stay down here with you
Verse II
We will drift across the green fields
Hand in hand forever
Searching through the Dreamtime
For a place to call our own
On through days of golden wattle
And nights like darkened crystal
We will always be together
You will never be alone
Chorus
My heart will soar the skies above
The red hills of Australia
Sweep the tops of gum trees
Reaching high into the blue
And I will leave all that is old
And has the comfort of familiar
To sail across the seas
So I can stay down here with you
And I will sail across the seas
And I will stay down here with you
Breathtaking Gown

Trees in the orchard are burdened with blossoms
Birds have returned and their songs fill the sky
Fields are fresh-turned and the grasses are greening
Time for the planting for springtime is nigh
All dewy the dawning
All misty the morning
The sun sets in glory
each night o'er the town
Each sign speaks of Summer
and whispers "It's coming"
while Nature greets Life
in a breathtaking gown
All dewy the dawning
All misty the morning
The sun sets in glory
each night o'er the town
Each sign speaks of Summer
and whispers "It's coming"
while Nature greets Life
in a breathtaking gown
Fields that lie fallow are purple with asters
Grasses have dried and stand golden and brown
Corn streamers rustle all crisp in the breezes
Fall is at hand and the leaves are come down
All clear are the dawnings
All fresh are the mornings
The sun sets in glory
each night o'er the town
Each sign speaks of Winter
but speaks with such splendor
that Nature greets Death
in a breathtaking gown
All clear are the dawnings
All fresh are the mornings
The sun sets in glory
each night o'er the town
Each sign speaks of Winter
but speaks with such splendor
that Nature greets Death
in a breathtaking gown
Closer to the Truth (solo)

Verse
I'm feeling kind of lonely here tonight
My head is spinning from the way we fight
I tried to tell it straight to you
But sometimes grey's a little blue
Depends on who is wrong or who is right
Verse
I'm overwhelmed with sadness here tonight
The way you look away when I'm in sight
Where we went wrong I just don't know
‘Suppose it’s part of rock and roll
Gotta play it by the rules we write
Chorus
Closer to the Truth than a lie
Guilty as accused - no alibi
We live our lives in shades of grey
We'll live to love another day
We're closer to the truth than a lie
Verse
Though what you say is less than cruel to me
Your passion's like a distant memory
The brilliant colours we once knew
Have faded down to a black and blue
Hey welcome to our new reality
Chorus
Closer to the Truth than a lie
Guilty as accused - no alibi
We live our lives in shades of grey
We'll live to love another day
We're closer to the truth than a lie
We live our lives in shades of grey
We'll live to love another day
We're closer to the truth than a lie
